Maximize Your Power Wheelchair Experience with an Adjustable Tray

The Permobil Angle Adjustable Tray Table is easily attached to the arm rests of power wheelchairs that use a track system to attach accessories. I use a Corpus F5 VS Power Wheelchair by Permobil and the attachment pieces for the tray table already came with this chair (they are the same attachment pieces for the chest support bar needed for standing).

Once the tray is attached and set to the right height, it can be angle adjusted through simply turning the ever to loosen/tighten the tray’s position throughout the day. With the tray being clear, it appears less bulky which I appreciate in the school and clinical settings.

I have used the tray to study, work, and offer a general arm/hand support throughout the day. It fits 1 laptop or a notebook at a time – it does not fit both at the same time. Additionally, the standing features on my wheelchair need practice to build tolerance, but standing without anything to do gets boring. Through using this tray I have been able to keep studying and working on my computer while standing.

While the tray did not advertise as swing-away feature, it can be easily removed from 1 armrest attachment and “swing-away”. I use this feature for transferring out of my chair either at the end of the day or mid-day to use the washroom. It is important to note that the tray should not stay in the “swing-away” position for long but can be tolerated for a minute or 2 (from my experience). When sitting at a table, I do take the tray off completely. I have used a drawstring backpack to hold the tray on the back of my wheelchair when not in use (this has worked well).

Important notes to consider when ordering the tray are:

  1. Do you have the attachment points already or the track for the attachment points?
  2. If you want angel adjustability the tray must be at least 2 inches narrower than the armrests
  3. The cost can vary as you need to order through a medical supply shop or 3rd party online dealer (always get multiple quotes when ordering equipment to ensure you are saving yourself the most money possible)

I hope this is helpful for anyone considering their options for wheelchair table trays. This review and post is not sponsored by Permobil, everything written is based on personal opinion.
