We often don’t have to rebuild spaces for accessibility but design them with intentional use of the space. I think it can be easy to say “well it’s an old building” or “well do better the next time” when we have the opportunity to look at a room and make it accessible with small changes. I have seen a lot of call rooms this year and a variety of layouts. Some better than others.

I challenge you to look at your work space or next coffee shop visit and consider how small changes might improve access to the space for everyone! Let me know what you think and any creative ideas 💡 🙌

This has happened a lot when working with new supe

This has happened a lot when working with new supervisors because wheelchair users in medical school are just not common. People get nervous about how to teach a student with a disability, often because it is their first time having to consider the situation…in my case being seated for all tasks. While I’m learning so are my teachers. Ableism exists everywhere and medicine is definitely not immune to it. What I truly appreciate is when a preceptor has named that discomfort happening and we have been able to work through it in the moment.

Somewhere between 3rd-4th (clerkship) year patients become real, they have families, they have hopes and dreams, they look to you for answers. While I often have to say “that’s a great question that we will have to discuss with the doctor” I want to be able to answer their question and build trust.
