Life with a disability comes with unique challenge

Life with a disability comes with unique challenges but just because our lives look different doesn’t mean we are disqualified from any part of life. As a wheelchair user I can sometimes become complacent in thinking that no one views me differently (that may just also be a testament to the people I am surrounded by). But I occasionally get jolted back when an off hand comment is made or old-school way of thinking is vocalized. I personally see it as an opportunity for growth in the mind set of the other person and growth on my part on how to hold space for a productive conversation.

I share these small videos with a single reminder on screen to help push perspectives, raise conversation, and allow us to check our own biases.

Studying method for Medical School year 3 now that I am on clinical rotations 📚🩺

On clinical rotations we work in the hospital full-time often 8-12h days so studying on top of clinical can be tricky. Having a few options has helped when my schedule varies. If I have free time over lunch I can do some UWorld flashcards or if I am asked to read up on a condition I can find it in the pocket book or go to UWorld medical library.

It’s ok to fall or fail the first time….it’s about what you do differently the next time. Adaptations don’t have to be a solo endeavour, adaptations can involve other staff, students, and even the patient.

For example: if a patient has a wound on their head and they are sitting so I can’t see it here are my options:

1. if the patient is sitting ask the patient to lean forward and tilt their head down

2. ask the patient to lie down on the stretcher or exam table then I can see their head from there

If the patient can’t move or reposition themselves then they would already be on an exam table or stretcher so we can go back to #2 on the list.

This is what works for me, if you are perusing medicine this may work for you or you will have your own methods. I like to remind myself that there are multiple routes to the same end point.

This was a short but busy unit with 12 shifts over 3 weeks. There were a mix of day times, evenings, weekends seeing a variety of patients. This unit taught me:
🩻 About managing a patient’s care start to finish

🩻 Tricks to make clinical exams more physical accessible for both me and for the patient

🩻 How to assess patients effectively & efficiently

🩻 How to create a list of possible emergent diagnoses (understanding the basic physiological of each condition to determine next steps - tests & treatment)

🩻 Why ER wait times can be long + what is happening behind the scenes

🩻 Ways we can support patients such as keeping them up to date on next steps & checking in even briefly when possible

🩻 The variety of roles in patient care, working within a healthcare team, and communication

This list of course couldn’t be everything otherwise this post may not end. I was very fortunate that our program provides 1-1 clinical teaching with doctors who are excited to teach, patient, and challenged my skills/knowledge.

In addition to doctors I got to work with and learn from ER nurses and paramedics. The ER literally could not run without them, they are managing so many parts of patient care. And even with being so busy they took time to teach, show me what to do with charts, help me when I got a little lost, teach suturing techniques, wound dressing, what to do when there was limited space to see patients, and so much more!

Things I bring for every Emergency Medicine shift as a 3rd year #medicalstudent 🩺🏥 being a wheelchair user actually allows me to carry more things with me especially under my chair. As you can see there are tools I keep with me like pocket hand sanitizer and wheel covers so I can adapt to the clinical space.

If you are keeping a note book with you I recommend one with pages that are easy to rip out at the end of your shift to be shredded.

All these tools help me adapt, learn, and treat patients. Having the right tools and set up goes a long way helping with efficiency while being thorough 💪

Started my Emergency medicine rotation, which is 3

Started my Emergency medicine rotation, which is 3 weeks in 3rd year #medicalschool and what a great rotation it has been so far. The site I am studying at gives 1-1 instruction where I feel appropriately challenged while having support when needed.

I have been most impressed with the team dynamic in the ER. Patient care relies on nurses, paramedics, doctors, specialists, allied health, porters, technicians, and patients family/friends/supports.
