We have made progress over the years but there are still steps in public spaces, lifts that are not maintained, huge financial barriers to equipment, and much more… While we work on the big picture, the small everyday picture is built on adaptations. Finding creative ways to use the world we live in.

Internal Medicine Call Shift 🫀🧠 3rd Year Med Student Edition

On the weekends 3rd year medical students do 24h call shifts that are ‘in house” = hospital sleepover

During the day the on-call residents contact us through text or pager, while at night, pager is the go to method.

When I started call shifts I was concerned about not waking up the pager overnight. Luckily pagers are loud enough and don’t stop beeping until you click them so it’s hard to press snooze or miss it.

This weekend shift gave me plenty of time to study in-between. Huge pro of being on shift in-hospital is having access to the library 📚 100s of medical books/journals at your fingertips 🙌

Disabled people deserve to see themselves represen

Disabled people deserve to see themselves represented in healthcare.

Before being disabled I helped run programs for people with disabilities…I truly thought I understood accessibility. Turns out I didn’t. I was able to leave the program and my client without having to think:
🔹Is my path home down hill?
🔹Will the car beside me leave enough space for my ramp?
🔹How much help will I need in the evening?
🔹What piece of my equipment is broken and needs to be fixed?

Having disabled people in healthcare fields can only help improve patient care…especially for patients WITH DISABILITIES!

I miss the ease of exercise…I was never a good run

I miss the ease of exercise…I was never a good runner before but now I do wish it was an option. Rolling this path was a good workout so I’m trying to shift my mindset. Rolling and running have similar benefits and at the end of the day movement is exercise 🏃♿️

There are 2 types of call: In-house or Home Call

With in-house you sleep in a call room in the hospital in between getting paged. Medical students definitely get more sleep than residents during these shifts but it gives us a good idea of what to expect in residency (depending on the field of medicine we select).

🧠 ❤️ Overnight Call Shift (5pm-8am)

As a 3rd year med student I rotate through internal medicine for 12 weeks. Night call teaches me:

☎️ How the hospital runs in the evening

☎️ Knowledge I need to gain & have on hand (especially at 3am)

☎️ Who needs to be involved with a patient’s case & who to call overnight

In our clerkship years we are learning not only about the medicine but about the variety of specialties involved in patient care. Many of those specialties involve call shifts. I use this time in clerkship to decide what type of call I enjoy/prefer. Currently I enjoy call shifts especially one’s that involve ER consults…so we will see how that factors into specialty options next year.
